The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) announced a new licensing agreement with Gilead Sciences for tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a promising new medicine currently in Phase III studies. This new licensing agreement will bring relief for as many as 112 countries. These countries tigether make more than 92% of people living with HIV in the developing world. The licence will allow manufacturers in India and China to develop generic versions of TAF.

The Medicines Patent Pool is a United Nations-backed organisation founded in 2010 by UNITAID to increase access to HIV treatment and spur new innovation worldwide. The MPP offers a new public health approach to negotiating patent licences for the production of low-cost versions of new and existing medicines and works with manufacturers to encourage the development of needed new technologies such as FDCs and formulations suitable for children. To date, MPP has signed licensing agreements for eight antiretrovirals and for one medicine for an HIV opportunistic infection. Ten generic manufacturers have now licensed from the organisation.

A German Manufacturing Company Planning to Make 3D Printing More Colorful

Recently US Patent Office published an application (US20140134334 A1), which was filed on Oct 31, 2013. This application was made to get a patent for ‘a 3D extrusion print process for producing multicolored three-dimensional objects.” As per application, this process would produce mechanically stable, multicolored 3D objects with good color definition.

The best-known laser-based 3D printing process, which is at the same time the oldest, is stereolithography (SLA). In this process, a liquid composition of a radiation-curable polymer is hardened layer-by-layer by using a laser. The person skilled in the art can clearly see that the only possibility with a workpiece produced by this method is subsequent coloring on the surface. This is complicated and time-consuming. But, this new 3D printing process technology which will work over three different stages can  be used for the production of multicoloured objects is the UV ink-jet process. In this three-stage process, a pulverulent material is applied in thin layers, a UV-curable liquid is printed in the form of the respective layer of the subsequent three-dimensional product onto the said layers, and finally the printed layer is hardened by using a UV source. These steps are repeated layer-by-layer.

Prof. Fernando Patolsky, Tel Aviv Iniversity’s School of Chemistry and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, has devised a groundbreaking nanotechnology-inspired sensors, which is developed by the Herzliya company Tracense. This tiny chip can more effectively detect ultra low traces in air sample which can be ultra hazardous, and also can effectively fingerprint and differentiate such hazardous substances from the non hazardous ones, said the Prof. Patolsky. This chip can also detect TNT, RDX, HMX, TATP,and HMTD explosives and that to very quickly and sensitively.

Uploading Pics of Kittens Might Exempt You From Registering Under Russia’s New Media Law

Russia’s new tightened media law has made it mandatory for the bloggers to register, if their daily unique visitors count is above 3000 every day and also, not to upload  any false information and expletives, or any adult content on their blogs. Doing so will render their blog blacklisted. But uploading pics of Kittens, using polite tone, and not uploading any classified information might give you exemption to register even if your daily unique visitor count is above one million visitors – The Watchdog’s Deputy Director Ksenzov said, Lenta.ru reported on Tuesday.

Changing Trends in Trademark Field @ Thomson Compumark’s Trademark Report

In 2013 Thomson Compumark published Trademark Report, which covered over 186 countries. That report clearly depicted a significant change from 2012 to 2013  in the composition of the top 10 countries with the most published trademarks. Brazil showed the largest increase in published trademark with 53 percent growth over 2012. China dominate the 2013 list and countries like India, Mexico, and Taiwan showed a significant improvement replacing United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada. These statics clearly reveals the changing trend of trademark filing from developed nations to developing nations.

The top five Classes of published trademarks across all countries are:

Class 35 — advertising and business management;
Class 9 — data processing equipment and computers;
Class 25 — clothing, footwear, and headgear;
Class 41 — education, entertainment, sports, and culture; and
Class 5 — pharmaceutical and veterinary preparations.
